Traveling Cities

‘The city is being continually brought to life again.
On one occasion in intimate, tactile, delicate works, on another
occasion in monumental meters-high installations.
With drawn materials or with prefabricated products. With little cut-
out cardboard ovals or with polyester ponds.
Paper, black chalk, rope, thread, balls of wool, nets and gauze-
these are the building blocks with which the city reveals and divulges
itself to us like an organism.’

‘The city is thus being continually re-founded - partly with the same
palette, but always in another place, in another context.
No city therefore looks the same. Because the nomadic cities of Karin
van Dam are not in essence made up of pits,
ponds and tents, oval canvases and pieces of fabric, but by ropes,
threads, tensioning straps, rubber bands and paper fasteners.
